An open graph tag is an important characteristic for gaining a massive audience. We all know that the most amount of time internet users spend is on different social media handles. Whether it be Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram – all social media apps have the ability to boost your site’s popularity.

Many site articles/products etc are shareable on social media apps through a shareable link. If you are not new to social media handles which I am sure you are not, you would recall your family members or friends sharing articles, wish lists, quizzes, and just about anything on their Facebook profiles.

The open graph protocol is a meta tag that you can get for your site. Unlike an SSL certificate or a Google Analytics certification – it is not a security or an analytical protocol. Even then, it is as useful as any other tag to give your site the outreach it needs.

For starters, an open graph tag to your site can majorly improve your click-through rates. Social media drivers have become a major source of web traffic. Consequently, installing an open graph protocol on your site has become an important skill for digital marketers.

Open Graph Tags

Open graph tags can enable your web content to become a rich post on a social graph. It represents your post on social handles in a rich display. A neat post that highlights the title, description, and image of the object is likely to get more likes and shares in a social circle.

As the heading goes, this tag is used to define the title or headline of your product/article, etc. A concise title that is related to the content can increase your CTR rate. For optimal optimization, it is best practice to keep your title under 70 characters.

On a Facebook app, the title of your post is usually kept in bold and grabs reader attention. Hence, the title for your object needs to be super catchy and irresistible. In fact, if Facebook cannot detect the title of your object, it will automatically use the meta title. Even still, nothing is more eye-catching than a custom title for an open graph tag.

A short description of around 2 to 4 sentences is a good representative of your object. Next to the title, a short accurate description can be the final nail in the coffin for a user to click on your site’s link.

A description of your object should not be a replica of your title. Unlike other SEO descriptions for search engines, this one does not really affect your rankings as per se. However, it is a good idea to make it unique and compelling.

A URL to a unique image that represents your webpage. For most marketers, a web image can help their content stand out. Moreover, this is how you can set a particular thumbnail for your post. A scroll-stopping can help out your conversion rates.

Keeping a picture for social media handles is an important step in an open graph tag. In case you do not select a picture of your choice, Facebook develops a standard picture of your own. In some cases, it is an ad banner or an unwanted poster that will condition your site name to a spam link for your users.
